Washington, DC (January 22, 2019) — In response to Federal Judge Jesse M. Furman blocking the Trump Administration Commerce Department from asking about citizenship on the 2020 Census, HAF Managing Director Samir Kalra stated:
“We’re pleased that efforts to include a question about citizenship on the 2020 census have been shut down by the Federal courts. As we’ve stated in our public commentary, such a question would ‘exacerbate the difficulty in accurately counting Asian Americans more broadly and Hindu Americans specifically,’ by discouraging Asian American households from participating. Doing so will only increase the marginalization faced by Asian Americans, potentially depriving them of essential services and political representation.”
