For the upcoming Modi&US event, taking place on September 22, 2024 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, the Hindu American Foundation is joining with nearly 600 community organizations as a welcoming partner. These organizations represent a wide swath of the Indian American community, representing a large variety of interests, subsections of the community, and India’s faith traditions.
Rather than a political event or rally, Modi&US is a cultural event, described by the organizers as, “a celebration […] of the cultural ethos we carry around the globe — an ethos which views the world as one family, diversity a strength.”
On HAF’s participation in the event, Executive Director Suhag Shukla stated:
“As the largest and oldest Hindu education and civil rights organization in the US, HAF represents Hindu Americans who are deeply connected to their spiritual homeland of India. This event celebrates the Hindu American diaspora along with other diasporic communities connected to India. While HAF is a registered welcoming partner for this event as an organization, HAF is not a sponsor of the event. On an individual level, any members of the HAF team attending the event are doing so in a personal capacity, rather than official representatives of HAF.”
Shukla also noted: “HAF is deeply concerned about credible threats of violence and disruption directed at this event coming from Khalistani activists, as well as the disturbing incident of vandalism at a BAPS mandir near the venue. We urge local and federal law enforcement to take these threats seriously, and in the case of temple vandalism to treat this as a bias incident.”
