This week the Hindu American Foundation joined a coalition of organizations supporting letters from the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans which call on Congress to denounce racism connected with the coronavirus.
The letters, sent to leaders of the House and Senate, state:
“While we recognize the growing public health and economic threat the virus poses, our nation must come together during this difficult time. We need leadership grounded in truth and committed to taking on racism and xenophobia directly. We urge House and Senate leadership to take tangible steps to counter the hysteria around the novel coronavirus, such as passing a joint resolution denouncing the racism, xenophobia, and misinformation surrounding it.”
HAF Director of Education Shereen Bhalla commented:
“While panic and fear set in about the unknown, it is important that we not fall prey to xenophobic comments and behavior. We must come together in these troubling times. We’re proud to stand in solidarity with our fellow Asian Pacific Americans to denounce the racism and negative stigma associated with the novel coronavirus and call on our elected representatives to do the same.”
