The Hindu American Foundation joined Indo-American Kashmir Forum and Kashmir Hindu Foundation and submitted a Written Statement for the Record to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission as it held its hearing, “Jammu and Kashmir in Context” today.

The statement provides an up-to-date overview of the current situation in the newly created Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh within the Republic of India, and highlighted the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The opening stated expressed disappointment with the Commission for holding the hearing with a very short public notice. Customarily, two weeks or more of advance notice is provided. More notice would have, “elicited a far wider response from potential expert witnesses, non-government organizations working in this field, as well as the wider public, thus enriching the Commission’s fact-finding spirit” according to the statement.

The coalition also expressed disappointment with the timing of the hearing which was held on the same day that Diwali, the most important festival for over 3 million Indian Americans, was being celebrated on Capitol Hill.
